Night Light Winter Shelter 2025/26

Make a real difference this winter. Volunteer with the Night Light Winter Shelter.

This December, the Night Light Winter Shelter will once again open its doors to provide warmth, safety, and community to people experiencing homelessness in Basingstoke and Deane.

From 1 December 2025 to 28 February 2026, six local venues will offer dormitory-style accommodation for up to 12 guests each night. But the shelter, run by the churches of Basingstoke, wouldn’t be possible without the amazing team of volunteers who make it a reality.

They’re looking for around 200 volunteers to make this year’s shelter possible.

A look back at last winter

Thanks to the generosity of local people, last winter was the most impactful yet:

  • 36 people spent at least one night in the shelter
  • Guests stayed for an average of 21.5 nights
  • 19 guests were rehoused before the project closed
  • 144 volunteers gave over 6,300 hours of their time
  • Half of all volunteer hours were covered by just 18 incredible people

Here’s what some of the guests said:
“From the minute I walked in, all the volunteers were brilliant. They made me feel welcome straight away… I don’t know where I would have been without their help.”

“The night shelter was safe, warm and respectful. The helpers made me feel dignified at a really uncertain time. One day, I’d like to come back as a helper myself.”

What is asked of volunteers

  • Make every guest feel welcome and respected
  • Work safely and always with another team member
  • Avoid giving gifts, money, or personal contact details to guests
  • Signpost guests to professional support services
  • Be kind, patient, and non-judgemental

What the shelter doesn’t need this year

Space is limited. Please do not donate:

  • Beds or bedding (especially duvets)
  • Clothes or towels – instead, please give these to the Camrose Centre

However, the shelter does welcome:

  • Volunteers
  • Good-condition smartphones for guests
  • Financial donations from individuals or organisations
